Before the Storm

lyrics

Before the Storm

It was long ago
Our backs were strong
Our eyes were keen
Our bodies bronzed
Sailing under sun and moon

We were at port
So the story goes
Hoisting our sail
Lashing our loads
Pulling up anchor
Readying the oars
‘Fore the storm

Nothing seemed strange
Done it all before
Hundred times
Maybe hundred more
We knew what to do
When the clouds formed

The winds came fast
Rocked us back and forth
Skeel to stern
Starboard to port
Our deck buckled
Oh she moaned

We cast lots to uncover
Who among us brought this disaster
We tried in vain to row back to port
When we heard the guilty’s report

Our ship was doing all she could do
We were running heavy
She was coming unglued
We threw the cargo into the sea
Cried out to our gods please

There was nothing left for us to choose
The bones and profit told us what to do
We tossed him over into the sea
When his body sank
The waves did recede

It was long ago
Our backs were strong
Our eyes were keen
Our bodies bronzed
Sailing under sun and moon
